Back in the new year with another Matt Murray-penned review episode, this time disemboweling the teenage vampire fantasy Twilight. Marvel at the lack of respect for vampire lore and storytelling!

Oh, and as extra bit of pain, here's the music video for DJ BoBo's "Vampires Are Alive". I reiterate that the paths of these two things have probably never crossed, and I only do so here for the sake of comedy. Ha. Ha ha ha.

I suppose my only critique is that it may be unfair for (straight) adult men to be too dismissive of a film that is obviously aimed at teenage and pre-teen girls. Such stories are basically sex fantasies, and as such will be as noisom to those not in the target audience as they are appealing to those who fall within said target audience. I have no doubt that much of the cheesecake-ey (and more than merely cheesecake) films that I enjoy with wry humor, and enjoyed without reservation as a teenager, would make many women want to gouge their eyes out.
I don't dimiss it for being a teen film-there are ones I like-I dismiss it for poor execution. Watch the Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In, about a young girl vampire's relationship with a young boy, and marvel at the difference (she's a far more traditional vampire, for one, and that's not even the important difference).
Jeff, I wanted to kill you for posting the audio of Dj Bozo's Vampires..blah,blah,blah. Now that I've seen the video, I'm saying this nicely.

I can't figure out what the hell the attraction is with movies like this. I suppose the same can be said for gross-out comedies. I don't understand why they're popular with their audiences either. But having said that, for every National Lampoon's Animal House there's a National Lampoon's Van Wilder. Although putting F.W. Murnau's Nosferatu in a sliding scale with Twilight seems to do a disservice to the former.
