Lather's Blather Episode #04: Waylaid By A Noisy Pair of Hellspawn

I missed my self-imposed deadline, but not by much! The longest and most difficult to record episode to date in the short history of the show is now available through the current suspects and your feed of choice.

Direct download, as always, is also available.

From the news segment: the Russian Robocop, although it really looks more like R2-D2 or maybe a Dalek. As I said, its first day on the job didn't go that well.

Also, the HRP-3 Promet from Japan, designed by Yutaka Izubuchi or Mobile Police Patlabor fame. You can see it in action by following this link.

Sandy Frank might be the source of all our pain,
but Joseph Lai can bring his share of the hurt as well.
Damn you, Joseph Lai. Damn you to hell.

Super Mazinga 3!

Enjoy this still frame, since actual animation of Mazinga 3 is a rare thing.

The Flying Saucer of Whistling Irritation.

This is how the sickness starts, with cold sweats
and a feeling of abject horror (yours, not the character's).

President Andrew! (stop laughing)

Evil green Space Mom! (okay, laugh)

These are not little people. They're children.

Piss-poor comic relief robots.

This is how the sickness progresses: drowsiness and nausea.

First it's a lame flying saucer... but then it's a lame giant robot!

This is what happens when annoying children strip you of your robot skin.

No, seriously. Naked robots.

At this point in the review, my ENEGR level is dangerously low.

The vaguely Yamato-esque destroyer escorts of President Andrew.

Don't all giant robots have hatches in their faces?

The useless Prince Orion.

Model sheets? Who needs those?

Yup, Robot Dog. President Andrew's ultimate weapon.

GLOWING PAWS OF MILD FRUSTRATION.

Will you still respect me in the morning?

Final stage of the sickness: spontaneous human explosion.

Ah, sweet release...

Originally I'd planned to review Space Thunder Kids, but found a review on the Teleport City website that I thought did a better jon of describing the schizophrenic smorgasbord it had to offer. You should read this review.

Praise Bob!

"Model sheets? Who needs those?"

Gentlemen, behold! Crappy giant robot action!

This isn't nearly as thrilling as you think it is.

I'll let...

...these pictures...

...speak for themselves.

Diatron 3

Crappy comic relief robot Baipam.

Precision micros--errr--telescope.

Goblin bacteria have the Cavity Creeps beat by a mile.

Spears? Against a giant robot?

This is meant to represent the inside of the human body. For serious.

The annoying General Mary.

A castle. Inside the human body.
Not shown: noodle trees, bread trees, ice cream springs,
goofy kings who don't seem to rule over anything.

The eeeeevil Castle Lameskull.

Alas, poor Scope Dog...

I knew him, Horatio...

The much-anticipated shower scene.

Notebook doodles can be deadly.

Burning justice...or mild indigestion?

Checker and Chally. What they're doing in a human body is a mystery for the ages.

Needs more exploding goblins.

The much-awaited Diatron 5.

The only attack made against the big bad guy--the dreaded 5 Beam!
Or whatever it is! Because it wasn't named! GAH!

And because I promised it, here is the Rogue's Gallery of crappy Korean anime.

And also becaue I promised it, the Korean super robot version of Macross, known as Space Gundam V! I am speechless.

But wait, there's less! Here's the opening sequence for Space Gundam V.

It's good to know that at least SOME people take their self-imposed release schedules seriously. I think the original idea for AWO was to release episodes every Tuesday. Yeah, THAT worked out well.

I'll listen once I'm home from work. This place blocks all links from Garageband, Libsyn, and all the other podcast-dedicated hosting sites.

Great show. I admire someone who can sit through these things - I've collected almost all of them, but never made it through even one, even under the influence of the brain-damaging fumes that the uber-cheap packaging gives off.

I think I made it through the old DIATRON-5 dub on VHS, but with major psychic scars.

There's a giant Korean robot anime page here. More horror is out there!

I love me some crappy Japanese robot anime (Gakeen, Dai Apolon, and my favorite, Super Combining Magical Robot Gingaizer, which I'd be tempted to make my own lame compilation dub of if I had the soundtrack) but these things are just lame. How can they be SO wacky, yet SO boring?!

Oh, *I* thank you for sharing the pain! The rest of the world who hasn't seen this yet, however...

At least that version keeps the original title of the movie. I kind of like the weird "international titles" that some shows get, but the IFD titles, like the shows themselves, are lame.

I recall when DIATRON-5 was "discovered" by TF/Diaclone fans - boy were they disappointed.

I've really got to watch that DVD-R of DORVACK 1-6 I got back in 2005 one day...I've heard the show's not DANCOUGAR/BALDIOS great (offhand
I recall all 3 shows were by Ashi Pro), but it at least looks better than D5.

Baldios was Kokusai Eiga-sha/Toei, IIRC.

True, not to mention their idea of grammar that appears like they didn't really put too much thought into what they were trying to say in those titles.

Should be of note, a few days ago was the 10th anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong to the mainland, yet, it appears that Joseph Lai's still apparently bothering to make a quick buck out of these things. God the voice acting in these sound so wooden ridiculous (like exchange students being stuck in a room and anything Jeff said in his podcast about them probably being promised a meal in return).

Only positive thing perhaps is that they didn't try to use "Shit and "Fuck" a whole lot like in the live-action flicks Lai and Ho waded their fingers in. They must think we say that all the time! I had to subject myself to one of those films, I think it was called "Catman in Lethal Track" or something. Terribly scripted and from what I understand, it was essentially two unfinished movies spliced together. One plot involved a renegade combat battle in some jungle and the other, some white guy who got cut by a stuffed cat trophy and now has the superpowers to change the channels on his TV set without a remote. Somehow it all boils down to a scheme cooked up by some religious cult nut, who Catman must attack in the shittiest rip-off way I can't remember now, only that it ends very stupid and anticlimatically. I nearly wanted to ram my head into the TV set after the generic "The End" over red background showed up! Seriously, avoid that film like the plague (not to mention it's sequel I have yet to subject myself to).

I recall when DIATRON-5 was "discovered" by TF/Diaclone fans - boy were they disappointed.

I bet! I would've been too if I had been told of how cool this was, get the tape, pop it in, and go speechless in less than a minute. You just get lied to in the most sarcastic way.

At least Jeff didn't even try to do "Space Thunder Kids", In my opinion, that one makes Robotech The Movie look credible. :-)

Chris, I'd originally planned to review Space Thunder Kids when I ended episode #3, but then changed it after reading Teleport City's awesome take on it. I knew I couldn't do better.

The site Leopardon linked to is like having a third eye opened. I never knew just how vast the yawning chasm of ripoff Korean anime truly spans.

Once I get off my butt and make some show notes for this episode I'll link to a Youtube video of a South Korean show that answers an unasked question: What would a Macross Valkyrie be like if it were in a super robot show?

Yeah I remember. Just that it's still pretty facinating just what gets ripped off in that entire muckfest (love the Crusher Joe BGM that was used in one of the robot battles).

The site Leopardon linked to is like having a third eye opened. I never knew just how vast the yawning chasm of ripoff Korean anime truly spans.

I've knew of this page for a couple years now, so I've already gone through that shock quite well. Just know that it was very blatent and heavily done in the 80's when it seemed like there wasn't a concept or design that wasn't unused. Oddly, they never made actual TV shows out of these, as they mostly done them as theatrical features instead (still using rather a crappy TV budget). I akin these to the facinating one gets out of watching Turkish remakes of classic American flicks like Wizard of Oz or Star Wars. It is it's own ball of yarn that needs to be checked out once in a while.

One title I noticed at the bottom of that that I did get as an English-dubbed VCD some years ago was "Super Kid", which is rather a nice coincidence for a DBZ ripoff to even have some of the Ocean Group voice actors from the old Saban DBZ dub be used as well.

Incidentally, from YesAsia, I bought the recently restored (whatever they found of it) edition to "Robot Taekwon V", apparently the first of the giant Korean robot movies to be made in the mid 70's (think Mazinger Z but using martial arts rather than rocket punches). I already stuck up an English version of this on YouTube anyway, but watching the English-subbed DVD that came out a couple months back gives me a better idea of the plot in this film, and the animation isn't as horseshitty as it would be years down the line.

Once I get off my butt and make some show notes for this episode I'll link to a Youtube video of a South Korean show that answers an unasked question: What would a Macross Valkyrie be like if it were in a super robot show?

Oh, I think I know that answer! :-)

There's one guy on YouTube from Japan I think who apparently is a Korean racist but likes to throw up clips from these knock-off anime anyway if you look hard enough (where I witness the spectacle of Space Gundam V and some Wonder Woman copycat).

Of course I like to say they're getting better about it nowadays, those early years obviously showed signs that they were still learning this craft (after years of laboring on mindless American cartoons should prove their strength). There's still a lot of kinks to work out however (still haven't seen Wonderful Days). A more recent entry, "Yobi the Five-Tailed Fox" is said to be a very Studio Ghibli-type film, but still they've improved greatly over time.

I don't know how many people are interested, but just in case anyone hasn't been able to find Space Thunder Kids, I have uploaded it to Google Video. After reading the Teleport City review, I had to find it, and it was really just as incredibly bad as to almost defy description. Here's the link: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-496578072076583383&hl=en

Really, you just want to kill yourself after watching that slop!

Of course, why didn't I think of that, I should've stuck up my vids there at Google instead. Perhaps I'll stick up Solar Adventure there (people need to see this to understand THE TRUTH). :-)

Incidentally, I had to watch Raiders of Galaxy tonight, and I'm already in that mood Jeff has (except I don't drink). Wonder if the movie was purposely made in widescreen given the way it was mentioned about how the film might be cropped? On the other hand, the way the film constantly loses it's quality constantly during these panning shots makes me want to call it the Zapruder film of cartoons! Really, it's about up there with the typical 70's grindhouse flick besides the over-modulated soundtrack (god those voices, the main guys sound like they're castrated and those children are so terribly drawn it's sickening (really, I thought they were dwarfs the way they apparently copied some artbook)! And the constant use of those fades or whatever transition effect as a means of jump cutting inbetween periods of silence. I wanted to knock every teeth out of my mouth contemplating this logic.

It's no wonder DigiView has apparently kept quiet of releasing anymore of these turds! I wanted to get the one that rips "Tron" myself.

You might not want to; while the video is still up, I just got an e-mail from Google saying that the video had been rejected because I didn't have the copyright to it. I might put together a torrent of it if there's enough interest, but given that it hasn't been done before, I doubt it. I just wanted to put it up because the Wal-Marts around here didn't have it anymore.

Jeff Tatarek said...

We should probably hold off on any kind of torrent links. I mean, eventually I'd like to reach the "big leagues" and get advance copies of things to review (stop laughing) and it's probably be easier to do that without linking to something that's already been rejected for download by another site.

Duane said...

I can definitely understand that; like I said before anyway, there doesn't seem to be any real demand for a torrent anyway, or it probably would have been done before.

By the way, I watched bits of Space Transformers and compared it to Micro Commando Diatron-5 (since they're basically the same movie), and I actually found, in the few clips that I watched, that the Space Transformers dub was, for me, more watchable (although only marginally so). It was also fun seeing the first parts of Space Transformers were the same as the first part of Space Thunder Kids, just redubbed. Truly craptacular.
